Stars of Africa - celebrating 50 years of VSO
A vibrant and energetic evening presenting the cream of Africa
Join us to celebrate 50 fantastic years of VSO in the grandest event in VSO's history at the stunning Royal Albert Hall. Stars of Africa features some of the best sounds and talent from the continent, headlined by 'living legend' Hugh Masekela, the extraordinary trumpeter and singer who ahs travelled the globe with his soulful sounds. He is South Africa's most enduing musical ambassador with music that brims over with a contagious, joyful warmth and optimism. He will be joined on stage by internationally renowned artists Angelique Kidjo and Bassekou Kouyate.
A powerful and charismatic singer, four time Grammy award winner Angelique Kidjo mixes driving dance rhythms, passionate political lyrics and an extraordinary stage presence, described by Time Out as ‘an electrifying cool - as contemporary, stylish and vibrant as it comes'.
Bassekou Kouyate, winner of two World Music Awards in 2008, is one of the greatest masters of the ngoni, a traditional lute found throughout West Africa. The Guardian described his music as ‘both ancient and utterly contemporary.... Like an African answer to Hendrix.'
The concert, hosted by VSO President Jonathan Dimbleby, promises glamour and celebration at the climax of our Golden Anniversary year. All funds raised through the evening will support VSO's education programmes in Africa, where the first volunteers went as teachers 50 years ago, and where VSO still remains as a strong presence today.
Tickets are priced between £15 and £35 and are available from the Royal Albert Hall box office: www.royalalberthall.co.uk
