Computers and Laptops.

There's an interesting thread at present in the "Countries | Ethiopia" area about computers/software/ equipment to take, and Alex has also posted a useful document in a Google Groups group he created (so that non-VSO vols can also use it).

There is a lot of useful information in there - and it's probably worth reading even if you're not going to Ethiopia. One thing that several people have mentioned is the prevalence of viruses that infect USB sticks. Guys, it's not just in Ethiopia they're rampant! I've just been to a conference in Montreal & at the end of the second day the technicians were checking to see who'd used USB sticks in one of the classrooms - they'd had a plague of them earlier & thought they'd cleared them all up ...

As part of the work I'm doing for VSO's 50th Anniversary, I am trying to get media coverage for VSO in areas that you might not expect in order to raise the profile of the organisation to new audiences.  One such area is the Independent's Cyberclinic where you can mail you can ask for a solution for your cyber problem.

Having read Emma's post - I wondered if any volunteers had any issues that they would be willing to mail to Rhodri Marsden (the columnist) at the Independent?  He might be able to come up with a solution plus you'd be helping VSO get vital coverage!

Here's an example of the cyberclinic blog: http://indyblogs.typepad.com/independent/cyberclinic/index.html

Email fleur.deeson@vso.org.uk if you're interested!

Hi,

Anyone reading this might also like to check out and hopefully comment on my first-draft "Laptops in Development: A Survival Guide" following various requests for advice I've received.
